Chromosome 15q BP4-BP5 Deletion in a Girl with Nocturnal Frontal Lobe Epilepsy, Migraine, Circumscribed Hypertrichosis, and Language Impairment

2020

The 15q13.3 microdeletion (microdel15q13.3) syndrome (OMIM 612001) has been reported in healthy subjects as well as in individuals with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from mild to severe neurological disorders, including developmental delay/intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, epilepsy, behavioral problems and speech dysfunction. This study explored the link between this genomic rearrangement and nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE), which could improve the clinical interpretation. A clinical and genomic investigation was carried out on an 8-year-girl with a de novo deletion flanking the breakpoints (BPs) 4 and 5 of 15q13.3 detected by arra…

Le problème du réalisme des hypothèses en économie politique

2010

This is a version, slightly corrected in 2010 with regard to form, of a working paper produced in 1968. Its subject is the problem of the realism of assumptions in economics. It offers an interpretation of Milton Friedman's famous essay of 1953 in which, contrary to most discussions, Friedman's solution to the problem does make sense. Under that interpretation, Friedman does not assert that one should test the consequences of a theory but not its assumptions, that one can predict but not explain, or that individuals behave as if they were rational and firms as if they maximized profits. Such assertions do not make sense and ascribing them to Friedman makes criticism of his position much too…

Synthesis, cytotoxicity, and inhibitory effects on tubulin polymerization of a new 3-heterocyclo substituted 2-styrylquinazolinones

2004

In order to study the influence of 3-substitution on the cytotoxic activity of 2-styrylquinazolinones, new 6-chloro-2-styryl-3-(heteroaryl)-4(3H)-quinazolinones were synthesized by refluxing equimolar amounts of 6-chloro-2-methyl-3-(heteroaryl)-4(3H)-quinazolinones and benzaldehyde in glacial acetic acid. At 1 microg ml(-1) concentration, almost all 2-styrylquinazolinones showed some cytotoxic activity against the L1210 and K562 leukemia cell lines. However, only 6-chloro-2-styryl-3-(pyrimidin-2yl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone inhibited the growth of these cells by over 50%. This last compound was also the only member of the series that inhibited tubulin polymerization, with an IC(50) value of 5.8 v…

Isoindolo[2,1-a]quinoxaline derivatives, novel potent antitumor agents with dual inhibition of tubulin polymerization and topoisomerase I.

2008

Isoindoloquinoxalines 4 and 5 were obtained by refluxing 2-(2'-aminoaryl)-1-cyanoisoindoles 3a- e in acetic or formic acid. All derivatives were screened by the National Cancer Institute (Bethesda, MD) for the in vitro one dose primary anticancer assay against a 3-cell line panel. Compounds 4a- e, screened against a panel of about 60 human tumor cell lines, showed remarkable antineoplastic activity; they had GI 50 values in the low micromolar or submicromolar range and reached, in the case of 4c, nanomolar concentrations on 88% of the 59 tested cell lines. Flow cytometric analysis of cell cycle after treatment with 4c demonstrated an arrest of the cell cycle in G2/M phase. This effect was a…

Value creation in mobile tourism services : evaluating the value creation concerns of the Norwegian MOVE project

2007

Sammendrag på norsk og engelsk. The report presents the results of the evaluation activity specified as part of the MOVE project, a three year innovation project funded by the Research Council of Norway and seven industry and university partners. The aim of this project has been to establish a location-based electronic marketplace, offering mobile tourism services. Several pilot services including a map-based interface providing tourist guide functionality to the mobile handset, a web based tool for service providers’ registration of points of interest (POI), and two “infotainment” services (picture puzzle and riddle) has been developed. The Lofoten area was chosen as the target region for …

Dynamic Structural Changes and Thermodynamics in Phase Separation Processes of an Intrinsically Disordered–Ordered Protein Model

2021

Elastin-like proteins (ELPs) are biologically important proteins and models for intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) and dynamic structural transitions associated with coacervates and liquid-liquid phase transitions. However, the conformational status below and above coacervation temperature and its role in the phase separation process is still elusive. Employing matrix least-squares global Boltzmann-fitting of the circular dichroism spectra of the ELPs (VPGVG) 20 , (VPGVG) 40 and (VPGVG) 60 , we found that coacervation occurs sharply when a certain number of repeat units has acquired β-turn conformation (in our sequence setting a threshold of ~20 repeat units). The differential scatter…

Triggering dissymmetry in achiral dye molecules by chiral solvents: Circular dichroism experiments and DFT calculations

2011

The electronic circular dichroism spectra of achiral product “Lumogen F Red” (ROT-300) in four different chiral solvents are recorded at different temperatures. DFT calculations allow to identify two enantiomeric conformers for ROT-300. In vacuo they are equally populated; in chiral solvents one enantiomer prevails. Thermodynamic quantities involved in the chiral preference are derived. Chirality, 2011. © 2011 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Sizzled Is Unique among Secreted Frizzled-related Proteins for Its Ability to Specifically Inhibit Bone Morphogenetic Protein-1 (BMP-1)/Tolloid-like …

2012

BMP-1/tolloid-like proteinases (BTPs) are major enzymes involved in extracellular matrix assembly and activation of bioactive molecules, both growth factors and anti-angiogenic molecules. Although the control of BTP activity by several enhancing molecules is well established, the possibility that regulation also occurs through endogenous inhibitors is still debated. Secreted frizzled-related proteins (sFRPs) have been studied as possible candidates, with highly contradictory results, after the demonstration that sizzled, a sFRP found in Xenopus and zebrafish, was a potent inhibitor of Xenopus and zebrafish tolloid-like proteases. In this study, we demonstrate that mammalian sFRP-1, -2, and …

Structural and Functional Basis for Understanding the Biological Significance of P2X7 Receptor

2020

The P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) possesses a unique structure associated to an as yet not fully understood mechanism of action that facilitates cell permeability to large ionic molecules through the receptor itself and/or nearby membrane proteins. High extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels—inexistent in physiological conditions—are required for the receptor to be triggered and contribute to its role in cell damage signaling. The inconsistent data on its activation pathways and the few studies performed in natively expressed human P2X7R have led us to review the structure, activation pathways, and specific cellular location of P2X7R in order to analyze its biological relevance. The ATP-…

The General Education Act of 1970, a law for the modernization of Spain

2021
